’The Åmål weekend’’ Started in 1986

INTERREG IIIC – SUSTAINING SMALL EXPANDING TOWNS (SusSET)

: PROJECT ‘BEST PRACTICE’ proforma

 

Theme: Tourism                                    Town & Country: Åmål, Sweden

 

Project Title: ‘’The Åmål weekend’’ Started in 1986

 

Description: Event weekend. 2 days of entertainment for all ages. A ‘’welcome home event’’ to the citizens of Åmål after the summer Holliday. Other people are most welcome, as well.

 

Objectives:

q       To provide the citizens of Åmål a feeling of belonging

q       Get visitors from nearby communities

q       Increase the shopping during the weekend

q       Families go out together, enjoying their town

 

Process/Stages:

q       Several meetings with shop owners society, sport clubs, FÅC.  January-August

q       Make a budget together with FÅC (Putting Åmål in Centre)

q       Make a first outcast of the program for the weekend. March –April

q       Booking of artists. January – May

q       Organisation of the event. Contacts with the Police, stage builders, other participants and artists.

q       Final program is being promoted in the press and by leaflets and posters. June-July

q       Beginning of August. Åmålshälja (The Åmål weekend) starts on a Friday and ends on Saturday evening

 

Outcomes/Results:

  • People are proud to be apart of Åmål
  • Shop owners are proud to have a shop in Åmål
  • Visitors/tourists are proud to have been in Åmål, and they tell their relatives and friends about the city and its surroundings.

Learning Points:

  • It is very important to have a meeting after the events and check the outcome
  • Inform the politicians of the outcome
  • Involve more unions (sport clubs and others)
