Kouvelos and Old Municipal Market in Pyrgos

The town of Pyrgos has submitted two examples of best practice: a) the project for urban development of “Kouvelos” district and b) the foundation of the archaeological museum in the renovated building of the Old Municipal Market. Both of the examples contribute to one very important principle of the checklist framework, that of Long Term Planning and design.

The foundation of the museum was a great achievement of the Municipality which will secure the social, economic, environmental and cultural benefit of the residents. It will ensure the preservation and the exploitation or the cultural heritage and it will boost the town’s economy through the attraction of more tourists. The restored building of the Old Municipal Market was an ideal place for the housing of the museum and has already made the town more beautiful.

The second project is wider and contributes to more than one sector. The key aim of the project is to support the development of an underdeveloped district. The project includes public works (road construction, water supply, drainage, creation of a cultural park, a nursery school and an athletic centre) and employment programs. So, it contributes towards a vibrant local economy as well as towards equity and justice. It helps to create an inclusive and supportive community.
