Developing Whole Town Strategy - Aeghio/Greece

Theme: Developing Whole Town Strategy   Town & Country: Aeghio/Greece

 

Project Title: Integrated Advisory Actions for the Urban Development of the area of Myrtia – Rock of Trypiti of Aegion Municipality

 

Description: The proposed project is a complete intervention that aims to the local growth of the area of Myrtia through the creation of the conditions that will allow the increase of employability, the social integration, the promotion of equal opportunities for all.

The upgrade, revitalisation and development of the area of Myrtia will be achieved through a strategy that includes upgraded environment with long-lasting prospects of improvement and evolvement through the support and  creation of essential infrastructures and on the other hand the creation of social conditions that promise balanced growth and equal opportunities.

Objectives:

*      The improvement of urban space in level of infrastructures

*      The creation of infrastructures that will contribute to the creation of work opportunities, the confrontation of unemployment, poverty and social exclusion and in the management of social phenomena with energetic forms of action that refer to the growth of human potential with investments as the education, the professional training, the employment

*      Re use of inactive building reserve and its exploitation for the operation of enterprising or cultural and social infrastructures.

*      Actions for securing the equality of  the genders and the confrontation of social exclusion phenomena

*      Main aim is the improvement of the quality of life for the residents of the area of Myrtia and their energetic attendance for the upgrade of their life via the proposed Complete Intervention

 

Process/Stages: On going process. The Intervention started on January 2005 and will be completed at the end of January 2008.

Outcomes/Results:

  • Transports, road network, there will be road constructions in the internal road network of settlement as well as in the entry of region, which connects the settlement with the old national road.

 

  • Sewerage – sewages network: it will include works of  sewerage impure extending the existing network of the area in roads where it does not exist

 

  • Urban rehabilitation 

Ø      Electric lighting: after a statistical research that was realised in the region by municipal personnel, it was found out that one of the residents’ demands was the increase and extension of electric lighting in the basic arteries as well as in the smaller streets of the area. The total cost is estimated to be 80.000€.

 

Ø      Construction of a square-5x 5 football courts: There will be construction works for a square, playground and a 5x5 football court, in the centre of the area on a building plot that will be bought by the Municipality and which is found close by to the elementary school and also the commercial and social activity centre of the area’s residents. The estimated cost for the above intervention (on a ground of almost 2 acres) is 100.000€

Ø      Reformation of communal spaces: There will be construction works for the reformation of communal spaces which will concern construction of pavements and creation of parking space near the Trypiti church. The project also includes the creation of two nodes in the entrance of the area, tree plantings on the perimeter of the Biological cleaning creating a natural dam between it and the resident area as well as the interior of the region.

The total cost is estimated to be 150.000€

  • Health-Social services: Day care centre: The area of Myrtia is located far from the city centre and the residents face the problem of the absence of social services benefits. For this reason, the creation of a day care centre next the elementary school is essential. The plot that will be used is forecasted and fixed under the approved city plan of the region. Of course the area will have to be expropriated.

The total cost is estimated to be 245.000€

  • Restoration – Repair – Maintenance – Arrangement of the buildings of former paper industry: There is no infrastructure that would be related with the upgrade the city’s cultural and social growth. For this reason and in combination with the municipality’s intention for the creation of an institute of Education for farmers for agricultural professions and the Foundation of Technological Institutions in that will be placed in a near by estate, we have proposed the renovation, maintenance, repair and arrangement of the buildings of the former paper industry, a building of almost 1300m2, with interesting architectural elements, for the creation of a multi centre and accommodation of services and offices, that will provide cultural, social services etc.

The total cost is estimated to be 700.000€

 

The completed approach of problems will be achieved through the configuration of partnership, the aid of enterprising spirit, the improvement of dexterities of human potential adapted in the local level and the guarantee of equality for all the members of local society

The aim of this project is the improvement of urban space and the intensification of economic prosperity and social cohesion, with accent to the completed approach to the problems that influence the equality and the social integration
