Charity Bike Ride

David Culshaw            Charity Cycle

Land’s End to John O’ Groats

Start around 18th April from Stonehaven Pool. Cycle up to the Station and get the train to Land’s End

I am planning to cycle by myself from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, using minor roads and a few off road sections. I intend to start the journey on or about the 18th April, taking about three weeks for the journey. I will be relatively self sufficient in that I will have with me a tent and all the necessary camping equipment and will endeavor not to make too much use of B&B’s etc.

The planned route is about 1000 miles.

It is my intention to raise money for the following three charities

  • Braemar Mountain Rescue Team
  • Marie Currie Cancer Care
  • The Friends of Stonehaven Outdoor Swimming Pool

Background information to the above charities

Braemar Mountain Rescue Team

As many people know I am extremely interested in the outdoors – my main interest being hill walking. In fact, about 20 years ago, I completed all the Munros and am now tackling the Corbetts. Fortunately I have never needed rescuing but I know many who have. The Braemar team relies entirely on voluntary donations. It is a vital organization, which provides cover throughout the Grampians and Cairngorms throughout the year. Many hill walkers and climbers owe their lives to the Braemar team.

Marie Curie Cancer Care

Marie Curie runs a Hospice in Edinburgh and also provides nurses to care, for those suffering from cancer, in their own homes. There are many families who have found the services of the above charity invaluable in caring for a loved one.

Friends of Stonehaven Outdoor Swimmimg Pool

The friends do all the maintainence of Stonehaven Pool. It is the last remaining heated, salt water pool in Scotland. It is 50m in length and with its Art Deco Style is very much one of the attractions of the area. In the summer months it is well used by visitors to the North East, by members of the local community and in particular it provides a useful focus for many young people in the area during the school holidays. Many retired folk swim in the pool every morning during the summer – the pool obviously contributes to the good health of many of the folk in the area as well as providing an important social function. Without the work of the Friends, the pool would not be viable and the pool would close. The friends are planning to raise enough money to build a children’s pool inside the complex. This involves removing and then rebuilding part of the perimeter wall. The total cost of this project is in the region of £190 000.

Any help with donations or sponsorship would be appreciated.
