Aberdeenshire Council wish to stabilise crumbling cliffs on the Bervie Braes on the popular tourist road from Stonehaven to Dunnottar Castle
The cost of this is estimated to be up £3 million and Aberdeenshire Council today confirmed it is asking the Scottish Government to stump up the cash to cover this.
Aberdeenshire Council has been monitoring the condition of the braes for 10 years. and although there is no immediate danger of collapse, work has to be carried out to prevent a future landslip.
The area has been hit by landslips on previous occasions and only one way traffic is permitted as barriers have been erected on the road.
At the foot of the Bervie Braes there are around 50 houses in a vulnerable location.
The application for government help comes on the back of an initial feasibility study into what work would be required to stabilise the rock face.
The detail and extent of the actual work to be carried out has not yet been determined and will be the subject of a further report once the current feasibility study is complete.
