In what is turning out to be an exciting year for the 20 community radio stations in Scotland, a Stonehaven based group is getting closer to being able to broadcast to the local area. Mearns FM has today announced that they have received a grant of £6,000 from Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland, which will help with the cost of transmitters for Laurencekirk and Inverbervie.
Announcing the news, Convenor Ian Hunter said: “A dedicated team of volunteers has been working tirelessly over the last year, making sure that we will have the funding and equipment we need to start broadcasting to the Mearns. We will be carrying out test transmissions over the next few months. Money from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland is invaluable in giving us all a lift in what has been a long haul.”
As well as budding presenters, the group needs the help of local “techies” who can help set up the studio and transmitters. A lot of interest is already being shown by local businesses that are looking for low-cost ways to promote their businesses, and the Stonehaven Business Association is keen to support the community led radio station. And Mearns FM is offering free training to community groups who want to produce programmes or adverts to promote themselves on the air.
