The Navigator was Keaton’s most commercially successful film & features his most ambitious prop – an ocean liner. Keaton plays a spoilt millionaire who is cast adrift with his girlfriend (Kathryn McGuire) by the actions of saboteurs. Alone on the high seas, the hapless pair must learn to feed themselves, survive all the rigours the ocean can throw at them & repel an attack by cannibals (sorry - 1924 was not a politically correct year). Heaving with brilliant sight gags, the film also features an underwater sequence. Never Weaken was Lloyd’s last 3 reel short before his move to feature length films. It includes some of the high rise gags for which he is justly acclaimed, as Lloyd attempts to commit suicide believing his sweetheart has rejected him.
Stephen Horne is based at the BFI Southbank in London. Internationally recognised as a composer & accompanist he has met with acclaim at film festivals in Pordenone, Telluride, San Francisco, Berlin and Bonn. www.stephenhorne.co.uk
