Godalming developed as a traditional market town and also prospered from the diverse local industries. For example the strong association with the wool trade goes back over 300 years with a tradition in luxury knitwear going back over 100 years. Indeed the iconic Sports Sweater, a vee-neck woollen sweater in cable stitch with club colours around the cuffs and collar, was first produced by the local firm Alan Paine for the sports teams of Charterhouse School. The style became synonymous with sports teams around the world and indeed became a fashion icon. To this day, the mix of specialist shops reflects back on Godalming's rich past.
